Ferromanganese
The principal manganese carrier in carbon steelmaking, supplied in high-carbon, medium-carbon and low-carbon forms according to the carbon the melt can accept.
Overview
Ferromanganese supplies manganese for deoxidation, for desulphurisation through the formation of manganese sulphide, and as a specified alloying element. Manganese raises hardenability and tensile strength and counteracts the embrittling effect of sulphur. The grade chosen is determined mainly by the carbon limit of the steel being made, which is why the same manganese unit is sold across a wide carbon range.
Applications
- Deoxidation and desulphurisation of carbon steel
- Manganese alloying in long and flat products
- Low-carbon grades for stainless and low-carbon steel practice
- Manganese addition in cast iron and specialised alloys
Typical specifications
Commercial ranges commonly encountered in international trade. These are indicative only. Confirmed analysis is issued per lot against the agreed specification for a shipment.
| GRADE | MN | C | SI MAX | P MAX | S MAX |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| High carbon (HC) | 74–82% | 6.0–7.5% | 1.0% | 0.35% | 0.03% |
| Medium carbon (MC) | 75–85% | 1.0–2.0% | 1.5% | 0.30% | 0.03% |
| Low carbon (LC) | 80–90% | 0.5–0.75% | 1.0–2.0% | 0.30% | 0.03% |
Forms and sizing
Lump, typically 10–50 mm or 10–100 mm, with crushed and sized fractions available. Carbon content is the defining commercial variable and is confirmed per lot.
Packing
Big bags of 1,000 or 1,250 kg, steel drums for low-carbon grades, or bulk.
Industries and buyers
Carbon steel producers, long and flat product mills, and foundries.
