Ferrochrome
The chromium carrier behind stainless steel, supplied in high-carbon, low-carbon and charge grades to suit the melting route.
Overview
Ferrochrome provides the chromium that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance and contributes hardenability and wear resistance in alloy and tool steels. Charge chrome, with a lower chromium content and higher carbon, is the volume product for stainless melting in modern practice; low-carbon grades are used where the finished steel cannot tolerate carbon pickup. The market follows stainless steel output and chrome ore rather than the carbon steel cycle.
Applications
- Chromium alloying in stainless and heat-resisting steel
- Alloy, tool and wear-resistant steel production
- Hardfacing alloys and welding consumables
- Specialised cast iron grades
